A career counselling session was organized by The Sankara Nethralaya Academy (TSNA),a unit of Medical Research Foundation, Chennai) is a forerunner and leader in the area of imparting healthcare and health management technology and draws its strength from its parent organizations, Sankara Nethralaya, the Medical Research Foundation and Vision Research Foundation, a State of the Art Research Facility on its  College road main campus, Chennai on 12.04.2015, Sunday to facilitate students completing their schooling to discover new and exciting academic options, young people had an opportunity to discover a whole range of courses in the healthcare sector that could help them build a great career.

Inaugurating & speaking on the occasion Shri A. Mahalingam, Deputy Registrar of Sankara Nethralaya Academy gave a detailed account about the Institution and its facilities. 

He highlighted that the healthcare service sector is booming and that there are abundant career opportunities here, which he explained has made many institutions like the Sankara Nethralaya Academy to offer specialized courses in this sector to prepare students aspiring to be a part of this high growth industry

Sri A. P Irungovel, Manager – Patients Education & Counselling dept, Sankara Nethralaya gave a presentation on Goal – Towards healthcare services.

Prof S. Ramani, Principal of the Academy welcomed the students and parents attending the session and highlighted the importance of Value based education with focus on knowledge, Skill and Attitude.

Mr Senthil Kumar G, Asst Professor of Management Studies  - Briefed about 3 years full time BBA in Hospital and Healthcare Management programme in collaboration with Hindustan University. This programme is designed to provide healthcare professionals with specialized training in healthcare management, clinical information system management and health services administration. The government is also trying that public hospitals also need to be run professionally and for that reason BBA in Hospital and Healthcare Management is getting very popular now a days. If we see towards the market then we find that there is a wide gap between demand and supply for trained healthcare professionals in the hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and in healthcare providing organizations. So the requirement of the healthcare management is on a boom. The core main objective of this programme is to develop young managers for managing healthcare organization and to build knowledge, develop skills and expose students to real work situations in hospital and healthcare institutions. Students can get excellent opportunities under junior & middle level management in Hospitals, Nursing Homes, State health departments, Medical Research Institutes, Pharmaceutical industries, Health Insurance sectors and IT domain in Healthcare.

Dr Anuja R. Singh, Head – Optometry programs, spoke about a new course called B.Sc in Ophthalmic Dispensing, integrated with FBDO, which offers the student to pursue a dual degree program, of international standards right here in India. The course includes subjects like basic ocular sciences, basic human sciences, optics, ophthalmic dispensing, nutrition, psychology, ocular diseases and organizational behavior. After completing this course, the student can work in managerial capacity in optical retail outlets and hospital-based retail outlets. The student can also take up India-centric research in spectacle lens design and can enter the field of academics.

Reminding the students of Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Less Travelled, Anuja urged the students to go for newer courses to become successful in life. 

More than 100 students and their parents participated this session and at t the end of the counselling session, the Students and their parents discussed and clarified their queries on their preferred courses in detail and also collected the applications for these courses.

The Sessions ended with Vote of thanks by Ms Sreedevi of Sankara Nethralaya Academy.
