ABDO introduces
first dispensing diploma in India
Association of British Dispensing Opticians
(ABDO) has teamed up with India ’s
Sankara Nethralaya
Academy , a unit of Medical Research
Foundation, Chennai , India to introduce the first
professional training course to people already working within the optical
sector in the country.
Currently there is no professional dispensing training
available in the subcontinent and therefore, unlike in the UK , those
working in the sector are not professionally qualified. ABDO hopes that by
teaming up with Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya the Diploma in
Ophthalmic Dispensing will ensure that higher standards are followed in the
future.
The Association’s new course will cover both the
technical and more advanced aspects of dispensing, with students required to
attend a series of block release sessions supervised by ABDO tutors at the
Elite School of Optometry.
The Diploma is a three-year course offered via
distance learning. Running over six semesters, students will be assessed
through theory and practical-based examinations each term.
ABDO general secretary, Tony Garrett commented: “There
is a steadily growing recognition worldwide of the need for professionally
qualified dispensing opticians and this is highlighted by the initiative ABDO
has jointly founded in India .
“The Association is delighted to be the first
organisation to form a partnership that will inevitably bring about higher
optical dispensing standards in this rapidly emerging nation. It also further
demonstrates ABDO’s successful and continued expansion into international
markets.”
